Here's the thing, however much I pushed those notes back, they still stuck-out. -24dB of fast hard compression was barely touching the problem. What?!? Of course, you already know what the problem was. I can scarcely believe that I wasted a 1/2 hour on that part. One jug of Lavazza later (and some slightly wider looping points) and it was blindingly obvious that I'd killed the piano dead. As in flat, dull and downright wrong. It took a couple of dBs off the peaks to do the job, and about 2 minutes. What went wrong? Focus! I was listening to the loud notes so I heard the loud notes, and it's as simple as that. I listen to my sitaring string, I hear my sitaring string and not the song I'm playing. The knack is to be utterly obsessive one moment then kick back and listen to the music flow by without sweating the small stuff. Hearing without listening. It's that simple but not at all easy. I find that playing tracks whilst I'm washing-up works as well as anything I've found (and keeps me out of trouble); what d you do?
